No extension talks between RJ Barrett, Raptors

Raptors star RJ Barrett expressed his admiration for his former team, the New York Knicks, after they secured their first NBA championship in over five decades during their historic 2026 NBA Finals victory over the San Antonio Spurs. During a recent media day, Barrett conveyed his genuine happiness for the Knicks' success, despite formerly harboring some resentment following his trade to the Raptors in 2023.

"I still have a lot of friends over there," Barrett said, acknowledging the deep connections he still maintains with his former teammates. "I got drafted there. The team was horrible. I been to the playoffs twice over there. Definitely was able to have a small part in them getting to where they are now. I felt a little pride in that."

Now in his fourth season with the Toronto Raptors, Barrett is more focused on helping his new team achieve its own championship aspirations. He credits the recent Raptors' progress, particularly their playoff debut in the 2025-26 season, for providing a renewed sense of motivation: "The Mayor [Zohran Mamdani] shouted out [Immanuel Quickley] and I. Have a little pride in just being able to help something like that."

With Kawhi Leonard leading the Raptors and their East Division rivals the Knicks solidifying their championship-winning status, Barrett's message reflects the excitement and anticipation surrounding the upcoming NBA season.
