Nigeria urges UN Security Council to enforce sanctions on nuclear weapons proliferation

Nigeria has urged the United Nations Security Council to implement sanctions in order to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction, as stated by President Bola Tinubu and conveyed by Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim. The call for action was made during a meeting in New York, which took place on the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

President Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria's security is not contingent upon possessing nuclear weapons and advocated for stricter regulations surrounding such arms. He stressed the importance of adhering to the UN Charter and acknowledged the efforts of African leaders in keeping the continent free from nuclear weapons testing. "We must express our gratitude to African leaders for their endeavors in ensuring that the continent remains free from weapons testing and the production of weapons of mass destruction," Tinubu declared.

Nigerian President Tinubu further highlighted that with over 12,000 nuclear warheads currently in existence around the world, the international community must prioritize peace and complete disarmament.
