Niger Govt House stampede: Nigerians should not die seeking N10,000 – Atiku

Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at the Niger State Government House that resulted in the deaths of three individuals. The condition that prompted the gathering was the rumor that N10,000 would be distributed. Atiku emphasized that Nigerians should not risk their lives for such a meager amount during the country's hardships.

Speaking through Phrank Shaibu, ADC's Director of Strategic Communication, Atiku mourned the deceased and their families, calling for immediate care for the injured. He criticized the actions of the crowd, stating that desperation must never be met with a distribution arrangement that jeopardizes lives. Instead, any assistance from the government should be organized with dignity and utmost concern for safety.

Atiku urged the Niger State Government to investigate the incident thoroughly, publish a detailed account of the gathering, and provide adequate support to the bereaved families and injured persons. He stressed that there should be no blame placed on the victims for seeking help, and instead, the authorities must address why three lives were lost at the government's gates and how such tragedies can be prevented in the future.

He further pointed out that as Nigeria approaches its Independence Day, this catastrophe demands more than mere condolences. He argued that a prosperous nation cannot allow its citizens to risk their lives for N10,000 and called for measures to make life affordable for every Nigerian.
