NFL insider hints that the Vikings almost cut J.J. McCarthy in August

J.J. McCarthy's tenure with the Minnesota Vikings came to an end, but the discussions about him are far from over. Mike Florio, a reporter for ProFootballTalk, recently suggested that the team may have considered cutting McCarthy in August. Florio, speaking on his show, mentioned that the Vikings could have let him go as they reduced their roster to 53 players.

He stated, "It may have been a personality thing. It may have just been, it clearly was everything. And when he didn't win the starting job, and the next thing you know, there's a real question whether he's gonna even be the backup to Kyler Murray. That told you what was going on. And I think there was a chance they were just gonna cut him when they moved from 90 to 53."

Florio added, "So if you had in your head, we were prepared to cut this guy, but we decided to keep him around because an opportunity to get anything for him may arise, then getting a fifth-round pick back is a win." The Vikings only received a fifth-round pick for McCarthy, but it was better than nothing for Florio, as it meant the team avoided a more significant loss.

General Manager Nolan Teasley has hinted that he may do more with that pick in the future, so credit to the new front office leader is warranted until proven otherwise.
