n8n Agents Brings Standalone AI Assistants to No-Code Business Automation

n8n, the popular business automation platform, has unveiled n8n Agents, a preview feature that introduces standalone AI assistants to the no-code automation environment. This new capability allows users to define tasks in plain language, select an AI model, connect relevant tools and channels, and then let the AI agent determine the best course of action.

Instead of configuring every step beforehand, teams can describe the desired outcome, and the agent will take care of the details. The introduction of Agents is significant because many business tasks are not linear. For instance, a morning inbox review, ticket triage, or research request may require follow-up questions, context, and various responses based on the information gathered.

By bringing open-ended interactions to the table, n8n is expanding its automation capabilities without replacing its established workflow features. Agents can be linked to channels like Slack, Telegram, Discord, or Linear, and can be utilized through chat, scheduled operations, or within existing workflows. The demonstration video shows a Telegram assistant that can transform sticky-note images into tasks, log receipts, and sort emails.

In contrast to conventional workflows, Agents are presented as distinct components that can be described, equipped with a specific model, and given the necessary tools and context to tackle tasks based on incoming requests. With Agents, n8n positions open-ended interactions alongside its well-established workflow automation capabilities, rather than as a replacement.

Tools, channels, and context are integrated into the Agent framework, allowing it to leverage various tool types, such as built-in integrations, existing workflows, workflows exposed as tools, and even sub-agents for delegated work. Moreover, Agents have memory and session capabilities, enabling context preservation across interactions and knowledge grounding through files like CSVs and PDFs.

Access control is also a key aspect, with per-tool credentials, approvals, and scoped tools ensuring that agents only receive the necessary permissions for their assigned tasks.
