Morocco appoints first female prime minister

King Mohammed VI has appointed Fatima Zahra El Mansouri as Morocco’s inaugural female prime minister. Representing the centrist Authenticity and Modernity Party, El Mansouri is the second woman in history to lead a government in the Arab world, following Tunisia’s Najla Bouden. The monarch selected her over Fouzi Lekjaa, Morocco's football chief and prominent politician within the same party.

Morocco operates as a constitutional monarchy, with executive power residing in the king's hands. El Mansouri, 50, hails from a family with deep roots in regional administration; her father held the position of pasha of Marrakesh and served as the country's ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. She entered politics after founding her party in 2008 and achieved a significant milestone when she became the first female mayor of Marrakesh in 2009.

Over recent years, she has held various national portfolios, including minister for national territory planning, urban planning, housing, and city policy under former Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch. Despite her prominent role, El Mansouri has largely avoided discussing gender issues directly, describing herself as a "free activist" rather than a "woman of steel" or "iron."

In the past, she rejected accusations of using official authority for personal financial gains tied to land transactions in Marrakesh. The political landscape in Morocco remains complicated, with her party securing ninety-seven seats in parliament, falling short of an absolute majority needed for government formation. The incoming administration will face pressing economic challenges, including curbing inflation, elevating wages, and creating employment opportunities.

The government must also oversee significant infrastructure development projects, including preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by Morocco.
