MGEN, VITRO to build RE-powered data centers

Manila, Philippines – Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGEN) and PLDT’s VITRO REIT Inc. have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on developing data centers powered by renewable energy. The companies will conduct a joint feasibility study before deciding if they will move forward with project development. MGEN is set to explore potential sites for data centers alongside power generation facilities, while VITRO, a wholly-owned subsidiary of PLDT’s ePLDT Inc., will handle data center design, site studies, connectivity planning, and engagement with potential hyperscalers and other locators.

MGEN CEO Emmanuel Rubio highlighted the convergence of energy and digital infrastructure sectors, noting that reliable power is becoming increasingly important for the growth of data centers. VITRO President and CEO Victor Genuino emphasized the importance of improving power cost and reliability to attract investments to the Philippines' digital economy.

VITRO had initially planned to list on the Philippine Stock Exchange on Oct. 12, but the listing date may be postponed. Meanwhile, MGEN is currently generating electricity from part of its MTerra Solar project, which is projected to become the world's largest integrated solar and battery storage facility upon completion.
