Mercedes boss insists team comes first, but Russell–Antonelli duel adds intrigue

Kuala Lumpur, September 30 — Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team principal, Toto Wolff, emphasized that both drivers, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, will continue to receive equal chances in their championship pursuit, despite the gap between them shrinking. Russell's recent accumulation of significant points has reduced the 66-point difference between him and Antonelli, who trails by 66 points.

Wolff confirmed that Mercedes' core philosophy remains steadfast, placing team interests over individual aspirations, while still ensuring both drivers have a fair shot at the title. "Our overarching philosophy is to give both drivers equal opportunities to pursue a championship," Wolff stated during a press conference. However, he acknowledged that with Russell's recent success, the team will need to carefully consider their strategic decisions during races.

"With George scoring big points, the gap to Kimi has narrowed, and we need to evaluate our on-track maneuvers and car management accordingly," Wolff added. Russell enters the upcoming Bahrain Grand Prix with 236 points, trailing champion Antonelli by 66 points, after clinching a victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, where he further reduced Antonelli's lead.
