Man suspected of shooting prison warden knew victim from jail

A man accused of murdering prison warden Marcel Blijd in Amsterdam had previously been incarcerated in the same jail where Blijd worked, prosecutors revealed on Monday. Blijd, 61, was shot dead outside the De Baanderij restaurant on the NDSM quay on Saturday afternoon, with dozens of witnesses, including children, observing the incident.

According to the public prosecution service, the 37-year-old suspected gunman, Amin D., reacted to a remark Blijd made about his detention in Zaandstad prison. Blijd was known as a "father figure" to inmates and staff at the jail. D was brought before a magistrate on Monday, who ordered his continued detention for 14 more days on suspicion of murder.

Prosecutors stated that Blijd had spoken to D just before the shooting, and after a brief exchange, the suspect left the terrace but returned shortly afterward, firing several shots at the victim. Video footage showed the gunman not attempting to flee, instead throwing the pistol into the water and surrendering to police shortly after arriving.
