Maharashtra Govt Makes Aadhaar Verification Mandatory For Property Registration From October 1

Mumbai, September 30, 2026 - The Maharashtra Revenue Department has announced that Aadhaar-based identification will become mandatory for registering property documents starting October 1. The new rule, announced by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, aims to curb fraud in property transactions and increase transparency. The decision was made based on instructions from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, with a notification published in the Maharashtra Gazette.

Aadhaar verification will be required for 63 different types of document registrations, including property sales, purchases, and mortgage deeds. Bawankule stated that the Registration and Stamps Department will handle the new system, which will reduce human intervention, prevent fraudulent transactions, and improve overall efficiency and transparency.

For those without an Aadhaar number, they must submit proof of applying for one along with other forms of government-issued ID and proof of their relationship to the other party involved in the transaction. Children under 18 will require the consent of their parents or legal guardians to enroll for Aadhaar. The government has assured that no child or eligible beneficiary will be denied the right to register documents solely due to the absence of an Aadhaar number.
