Madlanga Commission won’t sit on Thursday after Matlala postponement

The Madlanga Commission has announced it will not convene on Thursday following the postponement of an important testimony. Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala, an accused in an attempted murder case, will now testify on 14 December 2026. Evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson has mentioned that Matlala might be called to give evidence earlier if any developments in his criminal trial create a convenient hearing slot, and enough notice can be provided.

Commission Chairperson Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga has criticized the evidence leaders for issuing Matlala's subpoena late, expressing that it was unacceptable that he was only notified on the 25th. The Commission will resume on 9 November, after a break coinciding with local government elections. Additionally, the Commission will not sit on 2 October 2026 before engaging in in-camera hearings over the following two weeks.

The Inquiry aims to conclude Phase Two in November, followed by Phase Three involving the return of Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who will be called back to the witness stand. Afterward, the Commission will concentrate on drafting the final report, which is slated to be submitted to President Cyril Ramaphosa by 25 January 2027.
