Let Nigerians’ votes count in 2027, Kingibe urges INEC

Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory, has called upon the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that the Nigerian people's votes are counted in the 2027 general elections. She made this plea in a statement on Wednesday to commemorate Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary, emphasizing that true independence would not be meaningful without the freedom for citizens to choose their leaders through credible elections.

Kingibe urged INEC to maintain its independence and conduct the 2027 elections in a manner that accurately reflects the will of the voters. She also appealed to security agencies, political leaders, voters, and young Nigerians to fulfill their respective roles in ensuring peaceful and credible elections, noting that the world is watching.

The 2027 general elections are anticipated to be a crucial test for Nigeria's electoral system, with political parties already gearing up and candidates positioning themselves for the presidential, gubernatorial, and legislative contests. Kingibe reminded that October 1, Nigeria's Independence Day, should serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the country's founding fathers and the importance of preserving democratic values.

She urged Nigerians to reflect on the state of the nation's democracy, stressing that independence should include the right of citizens to freely determine who governs them.
