Korean American artist Christine Sun Kim named MacArthur Fellow

Korean American artist Christine Sun Kim has been named a recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship, also known as the genius grants, the MacArthur Foundation announced. Kim is one of 20 individuals chosen to receive the $800,000 grant, awarded to those demonstrating exceptional creativity and potential, according to the foundation on Tuesday (U.S. time).

Her work addresses the challenges faced by deaf individuals in a society that prioritizes sound and spoken communication. The foundation stated that Kim's work effectively conveys deaf experiences and introduces innovative perspectives on sound and hearing. Born in California and currently residing in Berlin, Kim has extensively explored sound, language, and communication through various mediums, including drawings, performances, videos, and installations.

Last year, she was ranked No. 34 on ArtReview's Power 100 list and made the Innovators list on Time's 100 Art list. Kim's piece "Have Many Dumb Fights Agree"
