Karpowership seeks contract extension as Ghana’s power demand grows

Karpowership Ghana is seeking an extension to its power generation contract beyond August 2027, when the current license will expire. The company's management is optimistic about ongoing negotiations with the government and believes its continued role in Ghana's electricity supply warrants a contract extension. Presently, Karpowership supplies 450 megawatts of electricity to the national grid.

This matter gained attention during a visit by the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, to the Karpowership facility in Sekondi-Takoradi on September 29, 2026. The minister expressed concern over Ghana's growing electricity demand, stating that reliable generation capacity is crucial. Karpowership's current share of Ghana's power supply has fallen from 23% to 11%, largely due to increased demand and new Independent Power Producers entering the market.

Although the Ministry of Energy is responsible for deciding on the contract's extension, the minister indicated that Karpowership's contribution should factor into this decision. The minister emphasized that Ghana should not disregard other potential electricity generation sources as demand continues to rise. Karpowership's CEO, Sandra Amarquaye, confirmed the company's ongoing commitment to providing reliable and efficient power to the national grid and its intention to continue contributing to the country's power sector.

She expressed optimism about the outcome of the contract extension discussions. The minister also praised Karpowership for its corporate social responsibility initiatives in the Western Region, including educational scholarships and environmental interventions. He emphasized that the company's presence in the region carries responsibilities that extend beyond its core business of power generation.
