Karachi Launches Dumlottee Water Supply Project

A monumental Rs14 billion water supply project, aimed at providing 10 million gallons of water daily to upscale DHA and Clifton residents, was officially inaugurated on Tuesday in Karachi. This endeavor is set to alleviate the reliance of these affluent neighborhoods on water tankers, which has been a long-standing issue. The ground-breaking ceremony was held in the Phase VI area, attended by Sindh Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, representatives from DHA, Cantonment Board Clifton, and other key officials.

The project is slated for completion within 18 months, although Mayor Wahab has expressed optimism that water supply could commence as early as September of the following year. The execution of this scheme has been entrusted to the Frontier Works Organization (FWO). The project entails drawing water from Dumlottee, filtering it before pumping it through an 800mm HDPE transmission main, and subsequently storing it in a DHA reservoir. Upon completion, the system is expected to have a capacity of 10 million gallons per day.

During the inauguration, Minister Nasir Shah announced that the provincial government had allocated the necessary funds for the long-awaited project. He emphasized that the initiative is part of the government's broader development agenda and expressed confidence in the FWO's ability to complete the project ahead of schedule. Mayor Wahab highlighted that while similar promises had been made in the past, they had not been fulfilled.

Project Director Colonel retired Arshad revealed that the scheme would encompass integrated filtration and pumping infrastructure, alongside a centralized Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to monitor the network, thereby aiding in the prevention of water theft and leakage.

The primary objective of this new piped water supply is to decrease DHA's dependence on water tankers, thereby enhancing the reliability and quality of water delivered to the area.
