Judge recuses himself in Rohan Dennis case of driving while disqualified

Former professional cyclist Rohan Dennis has pleaded guilty to driving while his license was invalid. Judge Ian Press has stepped aside from hearing Dennis' current case, citing concerns that a member of the public might perceive him as biased due to his previous role in Dennis' sentencing. The matter will be heard by a different judge in November.

Dennis was handed a suspended sentence and a five-year driving ban after being involved in a crash that killed his wife, Olympic cyclist Melissa Hoskins, in December 2023. At the time of the initial sentencing, Judge Press warned Dennis that driving while disqualified would result in imprisonment if he were caught, emphasizing the importance of complying with the conditions of the bond.

In June, police apprehended Dennis driving with two children in the vehicle near the site of his wife's death. Following today's decision by Judge Press to recuse himself, a new judge will preside over Dennis' current case during a hearing in November.
