Inspection finds policing gaps at Kempton Park and Tembisa SAPS

An unannounced visit to two police stations in Ekurhuleni has revealed issues with policing capacity. Kempton Park SAPS lacked electricity and a functioning generator, while Tembisa was short of detectives. These findings follow investigations into the deaths of women across Ekurhuleni. Portfolio Committee on Police Chairperson Ian Cameron questioned whether the stations were receiving sufficient resources.

Despite this, the Gauteng government maintains that the challenges are not new, having previously raised concerns about infrastructure, equipment, human resources, and the Community Service Centre telephone line. Premier Panyaza Lesufi acknowledged the resource difficulties and stated that the province was working with national, provincial, and local stakeholders to address them.

However, Cameron noted that despite increased police visibility, the stations were still unequipped to handle a surge in policing activities.
