Indonesia razes poolside prison ‘villas’ where whisky, TVs seized

Indonesian officials demolished lavish prison villas outside Jakarta, removing alcohol and electronic items seized from the complex. Authorities raided the Cibinong men's prison and demolished ten of the accused inmates' luxury accommodations, which featured a pool, gym, and other amenities. The prisoners reportedly paid rent for the furnished villas, complete with furniture, large beds, TVs, fridges, and dining tables.

The detainees allegedly occupied the buildings without proper permits, although the money for the structures was not sourced from the state budget. The prison houses over 1,800 inmates, many times its capacity, and is known to hold individuals accused of violent and white-collar crimes, including corruption. Prison officials have suspended the head of the prison and four other senior officials following the discovery.
