IISc highest-ranked Indian institute at 254: THE World University Rankings 2027

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has claimed the top spot among Indian universities in the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. IISc secured the 254th position globally, out of 2,297 universities ranked across 118 countries and territories. The University of Oxford maintained its position at the top for the 11th consecutive year, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in second place.

Princeton University and Stanford University shared third place, while the University of Cambridge secured the fifth position.

IISc's overall score in the 2027 ranking was 57.0. Its research environment scored highest at 98.0, while teaching and research quality were scored at 62.1 and 58.6, respectively. Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences followed IISc in the Indian list, occupying the 326-350 band with an overall score between 52.3 and 53.3.

The ranking highlights a significant shift in the global university landscape. For the first time, Asia has overtaken continental Europe, with China's Tsinghua University rising to the 11th position, surpassing Switzerland's ETH Zurich. Additionally, the National University of Singapore (NUS) entered the global top 15, marking Asia's presence in the top 15 for the first time.

The rankings evaluate research-intensive universities across various aspects, including teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry collaboration.
