‘I killed my co-wife because she appeared in my dreams’

A 32-year-old housewife, Hauwau Haruna, confessed to killing her co-wife, Jamila Adamu, in Bauchi metropolis. She claimed she did it after repeatedly seeing Jamila in her dreams attempting to harm her and her children. Hauwau said she was arrested and taken to the Bauchi State Police Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for the murder of Jamila, whom she had cohabited with for over 16 years.

According to her, the dreams of Jamila appearing to her in various forms, including that of a cat, had been happening for a while. On one occasion, Hauwau claimed Jamila appeared as a cat and she managed to subdue it by hitting it with a pestle used by children to break palm fruits. She then chased the cat away, but it transformed into her co-wife standing in front of her room.

In a fit of anger, Hauwau hit Jamila with the pestle until she fell to the ground. She then picked up her newborn twins and fled the house. She initially planned to surrender herself at the estate police station but feared mob action and decided to take her twins to her parents' house for safekeeping. She told her mother to take care of the twins before turning herself in to the police.

Hauwau's husband, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, was reportedly receiving treatment at a private hospital in Bauchi, and his relatives and neighbors declined to comment on the incident.
