Greece Retail Sales Growth Rises in July

Greece's retail sales experienced a notable increase of 5.2% year-on-year in July 2026, up from a revised 1.8% growth in the previous month, according to Trading Economics. The acceleration was particularly evident in the food sector, with a rise of 5.6% compared to June's 2.4%, and the non-food sector excluding automotive fuel, which grew by 5.6% from 4.0% in the prior month.

Among specialized categories, supermarkets saw a significant increase of 5.8% compared to 2.2% in June, while sales in food, beverages, and tobacco, as well as pharmaceutical products and cosmetics, also rose to 4.8% and 5.9% respectively, up from 0.2% and 3.3% in the previous month. Conversely, department stores and books, stationery, and other goods saw sales rebound, with department stores increasing by 1.8% from -2.1% in June, and books, stationery, and other goods growing by 3.1% from -0.6%.

However, sales growth moderated for certain categories. Retail sales in clothing and footwear declined to 2.7% from 6.8%, while furniture, electrical equipment, and household equipment sales slowed to 8.7% from 10.9% in the previous month. Despite these fluctuations, overall retail activity rebounded on a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, rising by 1.4% in July, marking a turnaround from a decline of 1.4% in June.
