Google details Gems to skills migration, including free access

Google has announced a significant migration from Gems to Skills within its Gemini AI platform. This change will be rolled out globally today, offering users a more unified experience. Skills, which have previously debuted within the Spark agent, are now accessible in the Gemini chat interface. Users can invoke these reusable instructions for common tasks using a simple "/command" from the main prompt box, eliminating the need to access the Gem manager.

The new Skills feature aims to provide example capabilities such as preparing for presentations, matching writing styles, and obtaining diverse perspectives. Over the coming weeks, Skills will achieve feature parity with Gems, including the ability to share skills with others through links and incorporating Google Drive files or notebooks for context.

Gemini will automatically transition existing Gems to Skills. Currently, this migration is available for all free users who do not have access to Spark. Personal Google Accounts will no longer have access to Gems starting in November. The transition for Google Workspace, enterprise, and non-profit customers is scheduled for March 2027, while education users will have until June 2027 for the migration.

Skills are currently being rolled out globally to Gemini chat users. All other customers can expect access within the coming weeks.
