Ghana Jollof case: Salomey Baffoe’s family appeals to Mahama to secure her release

The family of Salomey Awiti Baffoe, a senior nursing officer currently detained in Ghana, has urgently appealed to President John Mahama and his wife to intervene on her behalf. The family's plea stems from the emotional and financial hardship their three children are facing due to their mother's ongoing detention. They argue that their mother's absence is deeply affecting their well-being, with the children "crying woefully" to see her and the family finding it impossible to "sleep, eat, or drink" because of the situation.

Baffoe, aged 40, has been charged with abetment of crime, specifically relating to false news published on the Ghana Jollof TikTok account. She pleaded not guilty, but the High Court in Accra denied her bail on September 24, citing her continued involvement in the investigation and the need to prevent potential interference with witnesses.

The prosecution argues that Baffoe's assistance in disseminating videos and recruiting others for the dissemination of content, along with financial transactions between the two women, provided grounds for her continued detention. Her continued detention has also raised concerns about her children's education, with one child set to begin Senior High School soon.

Her lawyer, Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah, maintains that there are insufficient grounds to justify her continued detention, emphasizing her presumption of innocence and describing the charge as a misdemeanour. The family is now desperate to have her released so she can return home to her children while the legal process proceeds.
