Frankfurt, Germany. European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has suggested she may step down a few months earlier than planned from her position. While she has not made any concrete announcements, Lagarde clarified that she will still be in office by 2027. During an interview with French newspaper La Croix, Lagarde stated that if she were to leave earlier, it would only be for a few months and would not disrupt the world.

The Frenchwoman, whose eight-year term is set to end in October 2027, ruled out running for the French presidency in April 2027, calling it an "utterly bad idea." Lagarde explained that such a commitment would require vitality, energy, and strength, but also inevitably entails sacrifices, and she is 70 years old. When asked if she would participate in debates before the French presidential elections in 2027, Lagarde responded vaguely, stating that her current focus is on serving the European public interest.

Speculations about Lagarde potentially leaving the ECB prematurely have been circulating for months, following her connection with the World Economic Forum in Davos. Concerns have been raised about the possibility of populist parties winning the elections, which could complicate the replacement of the ECB's top position. Lagarde had previously confirmed that she would not leave before 2027, but earlier statements indicated that she had not ruled out a premature resignation.
