Fedorov: Military robot prototype due in month, price must fall for mass use

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced that a military robot prototype will be completed within a month. Currently priced between $40,000 and $70,000, Fedorov stated the cost needs to decrease to $10,000–$20,000 for mass production. The robot's price will depend on its intended function. Fedorov emphasized that creating a humanoid robot should be approached step-by-step, starting with simpler solutions and gradually advancing to more complex systems.

He referred to the robot as "humanoid-like" rather than a traditional humanoid, highlighting its capability to perform tasks typically handled by infantrymen or assault soldiers. These tasks include reloading machine guns, replacing sensor batteries, and launching drones. Fedorov also discussed the importance of selecting the robot's hardware and software architecture and integrating these components.

After the first prototype, the team will analyze available components to address any component-related issues. Fedorov projected that demand for such robots could reach tens of thousands of units. He mentioned that his team is already evaluating a company with a "minimum viable product" robot that could potentially scale production.

Fedorov revealed the launch of the Army of Robots project on Sept. 26, aiming to increase the use of robotic systems in warfare and minimize risks to soldiers. Building on the success of the Army of Drones in 2022, Fedorov believed that the next major technological advancement would be the robotization of warfare. In November 2023, Fedorov announced plans to establish an Army of Robots and an Army of Electronic Warfare.

In March 2024, he stated that Ukraine was initiating mass production of robotic ground platforms designed to destroy enemy positions and equipment, clear mines, evacuate wounded soldiers, and deliver ammunition.
