FDA seeks scientists and consumer representatives for advisory panels

On September 30, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a nationwide initiative to recruit scientists, medical experts, and consumer representatives for its advisory committees. These panels provide guidance on drugs, vaccines, and other regulated products to the agency. The FDA is targeting vacancies in fields like oncology, cardiovascular medicine, neurology, genetics, and medical devices.

Advisory committees comprise physicians, researchers, statisticians, patient advocates, and consumer representatives who evaluate scientific data and offer independent recommendations to the FDA. However, these suggestions are not mandatory for the regulator.

FDA Acting Commissioner Kyle Diamantas emphasized the agency's efforts to attract professionals from the forefront of their respective fields. The FDA will continuously accept nominations, including self-nominations, with consumer representatives required to submit their applications by November 15 and scientific and other voting members by November 30 for consideration.

Members can serve for terms of up to four years. The Department of Health and Human Services has not commented on the number of vacant positions or how this recruitment drive compares to previous efforts.
