Experts Explore Buddhist Heritage, Ancient Inscriptions and Archaeology at Bhopal’s Birla Museum

Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh: A two-day national lecture series wrapped up on Sunday at the Birla Museum, delving into the conservation and promotion of Buddhist heritage and architectural layouts. Esteemed experts and archaeologists gathered to share their research, showcasing the rich historical and cultural artifacts found across Madhya Pradesh.

Shivakant Vajpayee, Superintending Archaeologist of the ASI (Bhopal Circle), presented findings on the extensive presence of Buddhist heritage sites near Bhopal, as well as the abundance of ancient art and architectural remnants dispersed throughout the Bandhavgarh region. Khushnoor Ahmad spoke on Brahmi rock inscriptions, emphasizing the diverse nature of ancient donations, including instances where sisters from the same family made joint contributions.

Dhruvendra Jodha highlighted the rich Buddhist heritage and archaeological treasures located in and around Ujjain. Lalit Kumar from Delhi discussed how Buddhist motifs and traditions have been seamlessly woven into traditional folk arts over the centuries. Azhar Kidwai offered historical insights from princely-era records regarding preservation and restoration efforts at Sanchi and other Buddhist monuments. Surendra Chaurasia shared research on Buddhist statues and iconography found in the Damoh region.

The event, organized by Manuel Joseph, Ramesh Yadav, B. K. Lokhande, Manoj Jain, and Aadesh Kumar Jain, was overseen by Manuel Joseph for execution and key proceedings.
