EU Extends Military Mission For Ukraine For Another 2 Years, Speeds Up Loan Payments — Kallas

The European Union has extended its military assistance mission for Ukraine for an additional two years. This decision came after the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, as reported by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.

Kallas highlighted that the EU has accelerated the repayment of a support loan to Ukraine, utilizing €20 billion from the Special Purpose Guarantee Facility (SAFE) initiative. The primary focus of the mission remains air defense, with Ukraine facing frequent attacks, as confirmed by Ukrainian Defense Minister Anton Khmara.

To address this urgent need, Kallas explained that the EU has approved procurement plans totaling €28.3 billion for future-production US Patriot missiles. However, she noted that missile production is time-consuming, and Kyiv requires these air defense systems immediately.

One proposed solution is for EU member states and partners to supply Ukraine with missiles from their existing inventories, with the understanding that these will be replaced at a later date, financed by the Ukraine Support Loan. Kallas also mentioned that member states are discussing the accelerated implementation of the EU's €90 billion loan allocated for 2027.

The EU has also agreed on the first phase of a strategic review for the military assistance mission, extending its duration for another two years. This review will include the establishment of a coordination center in Kyiv, aimed at analyzing combat operations and enhancing military training. Kallas emphasized that sanctions should be imposed on individuals involved in the fraudulent elections in Russia's occupied territories of Ukraine.
