Eddy Firmin Interrogates History and Colonizing Forces in Provocative Sculptures

Eddy Firmin, a multi-disciplinary artist from Guadeloupe, explores themes of colonization, identity, and history through his provocative sculptures. Born in the French West Indies, Firmin currently resides in Montréal, where he delves into the dark legacy of slavery and its impact on knowledge sharing across generations. His work sheds light on the forced migration of over 20 million people during the slave trade, resulting in countless deaths due to inhumane conditions.

One notable piece, "Sans signe" (2023), is a ceramic, wood, fabric, straw, and digital print that uses African traditions like Gwoka - a music, dance, and storytelling custom - as a means of resistance against dominant discourse. Firmin reimagines classical marble and alabaster sculptures featuring affluent European figures with Black men's busts, often himself, wearing Louis Vuitton branding and shackles, highlighting the uneasy relationship between the past and present.

Firmin also examines consumerism as a colonizing force, questioning how global society is altered by wealth concentration and the influence of corporations on daily life. This exploration is evident in his "Punching Bags" series, made of porcelain, and "Se faire maître series" (2022), which incorporates African masking traditions with glossy corporate branding. The artist's work prompts viewers to reflect on the agency they possess within a system that perpetuates inequality and commodifies human labor.
