ECI extends SIR schedule in Andhra Pradesh, Meghalaya; new dates announced

On September 30, 2026, the Election Commission of India convened for the second time in four days to extend the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) dates for electoral rolls in Andhra Pradesh and Meghalaya. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, decided to publish the final voters' list for Andhra Pradesh on October 16 and for Meghalaya on October 26.

Previously, the dates were set for October 3 in Andhra Pradesh and October 7 in Meghalaya, with the claims and objections period extended until October 10 in Andhra Pradesh.

The commission also reviewed the implementation of measures announced on September 26, 2026, to address concerns over the ongoing SIR across the country. These measures included stopping physical hearings for flagged voters and de-linking the declaration used for SIR-related voter registration from non-SIR States. The Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi revealed that block-level officers had begun collecting documents in cases where notices were issued.

Additionally, a committee headed by a Senior Deputy Election Commissioner and including an independent expert from IIT/IIIT was tasked with reviewing the ECINet portal to address concerns about its centralization. These decisions followed controversy over dissent notes reportedly written by Election Commissioners Sandhu and Joshi regarding the SIR process.
