Dutch man arrested over alleged ties to ShinyHunters

Dutch authorities arrested a 24-year-old man from Amsterdam on September 15, suspected of his alleged ties with the notorious cybercriminal group ShinyHunters. The detainee, believed to be the chief technology officer and security lead at a Dutch cybersecurity firm, is also accused of planning to carry out two murders in foreign countries. These attempted murder charges are separate from the ongoing investigation into ShinyHunters, the authorities clarified.

ShinyHunters has been active since around 2019, infamous for its large-scale data thefts and massive extortion demands. The group has claimed responsibility for attacks on various entities, including the FBI, European Commission, Canvas education management platform, Oracle, Salesforce, Ticketmaster, and AT&T. Recently, Google's security unit stated that ShinyHunters breached Oracle's systems again, having bypassed the company's new security measures.

Following the arrest, Dutch police found a "large amount of information" on the suspect's laptop, including details about the alleged murders. The man is currently held in isolation and will remain in pre-trial detention for at least another 90 days. FBI teams are collaborating with Dutch authorities to gather more leads in the ongoing investigation, according to FBI Director Kash Patel. Further arrests are not out of the question, authorities have stated.
