DLA faults FG as National Assembly extends 2025 budget to 2026

The Democratic and Leadership Alliance (DLA) has expressed concern over the National Assembly's decision to extend the implementation of the capital component of the 2025 budget to December 31, 2026. This marks the fourth time the budget's capital implementation period has been extended. The Senate and House of Representatives approved the extension on Tuesday, providing ministries, departments, and agencies additional time to complete capital projects outlined in the 2025 Appropriation Act.

Dr. Tosin Odeyemi, Head of Media and Publicity for the DLA National Campaign Council, criticized the repeated extensions as indicative of a worsening fiscal and economic situation. He stated that the fourth extension reveals the Bola Tinubu-led administration's continued failure to manage Nigeria's basic governance metrics. Odeyemi also pointed out that the extension could complicate budget implementation and lead to the rollover of unspent capital expenditure from the 2026 budget to the 2027 budget, perpetuating a cycle of inadequate fiscal management.

He urged Nigerians to demand greater accountability from the Federal Government over the handling of public funds, particularly the massive capital component of the 2026 budget that would be shifted to the following year.
