Deutschlandticket report reveals price rise for 2027

A report by the Deutschlandticket Coordination Council predicts a price increase for the nationwide public transport ticket in 2027. According to Rheinische Post, the monthly subscription could rise from 63 euros to 66,90 euros. The council, consisting of federal, state, and municipal representatives along with transport associations, is expected to confirm the 2027 price on September 30.

Initially introduced in 2023 at 49 euros per month, the price has risen annually. However, 2027 will mark the first time the price increase is determined using a price index, considering employment costs, energy costs, and general expenses. The German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) criticized the government for not stabilizing the ticket price, even as it plans to reintroduce a fuel tax cut.

Pro Bahn passenger association chairman Detlef Neuß called for discounts for Deutschlandticket users. Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil supports a windfall tax on fuel companies, while Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Economy Minister Katherina Reiche oppose it. The ticket, launched in May 2023, had 6.4 million subscribers but increased to 14.5 million by 2025, accounting for nearly 20 percent of Germany's population.
