Warehouse robotics software company Destro AI Inc. has secured $8 million in new funding to expand its platform for managing mixed robot fleets in enterprise warehouses, partly to bolster its engineering and research teams. The startup's software, known as MothershipOS, instructs various types of warehouse robots, regardless of their manufacturers.
Manthan Pawar, Destro's Chief Executive, anticipates the next major advancement will stem from an "intelligence layer" that enables seamless collaboration among robots. This coordination system operates independently of individual robots, assigning tasks based on time, location, and the specific requirements of the operation. To facilitate the handling of mobile manipulation tasks, Destro has developed a companion system called VisionOS, which employs artificial intelligence models trained on human demonstrations to perceive and grasp objects.
Customers can utilize machines from multiple vendors under a single system, and easily swap hardware as their operations evolve. Yusen Logistics (Americas) Inc., a logistics company, is the first customer to deploy Destro's platform in its transload operations. The company reported in August that it was utilizing the system at a facility in the Pacific Northwest, with plans to roll out the solution to 26 robots and a smaller 17-robot pilot at a Southern California location.
Rick Brunelle, Yusen's director of automation, stated that the platform provides his teams with "a new level of intelligence and control" in their transload workflows. Despite being less than a year old, Destro AI has already generated revenue, and its founder and CEO is confident that the company will become cash flow positive by the end of the current fiscal year.
The company has also demonstrated its capability by winning head-to-head evaluations against competitors with valuations exceeding $1 billion. Destro's founding team previously worked at Hai Robotics Co. Ltd., Dexterity Inc., and Matic Robots Inc., with Manthan Pawar holding a master's degree in robotics from New York University's Tandon School of Engineering.
The company's recent $8 million seed round was jointly led by Base10 Partners Management and Bonfire Ventures Management, with CoFound Partners also participating. Base10's co-founder and managing partner, Adeyemi Ajao, emphasized the potential of Destro's platform based on the company's two pilots already in production and its successful deployment with several major logistics operators in the United States.
Jennifer Richard, a principal at Bonfire, noted that the challenge lies in bridging the gap between a successful demonstration and a full-scale deployment, highlighting the importance of addressing operational complexity.
