Congress workers booked for attempt to murder over ‘defacement’ of CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Agra house

A case has been filed against approximately 20 Congress party workers, six of whom have been detained, for allegedly attempting to murder and grievously hurt Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's residence in Agra, India, on September 27, 2026. This occurred during a protest organized by the party outside Kumar's home in Vijay Nagar area, where the protesters wrote slogans on the gate and wall using black paint.

The six individuals arrested, including Congress leaders Anil Yadav, Mukesh Dhangar, Manoj Gaur, Rajesh Kumar, Raja Gautam, and Pankaj Chaudhary, have been taken into custody. The case was registered at the Hariparvat police station based on a complaint filed by Sub-Inspector Gaurav Gupta against eight named individuals and 15-20 unidentified Congress party members.

The accused have been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including attempt to murder (Section 109), causing grievous hurt to deter a public servant (Section 121), wrongful restraint (Section 126), assault against a public servant (Section 132), rioting by an unlawful assembly (Section 191), house-trespass with intent to cause hurt or assault (Section 333), criminal intimidation (Section 351(2)), and intentional insult to provoke breach of peace (Section 352).

Congress city president Amit Singh expressed dissatisfaction with the police's decision to include several additional charges beyond those related to the protest, and stated that a Congress delegation would meet the police commissioner to demand the removal of these false allegations. This incident is part of the nationwide agitation organized by the Congress party against Kumar.
