ChatGPT maker wants to be the App Store for AI as safety concerns grow

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, announced on Tuesday (Sep 29) the introduction of a more affordable AI model and continuously running tools, with the goal of transforming ChatGPT into an app store for artificial intelligence. The platform, utilized by 1.2 billion users weekly, will now allow other companies, such as Adobe, to integrate their software directly within ChatGPT.

Additionally, ChatGPT users will have the ability to access their subscriptions across various apps. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, speaking at the company's annual developer conference in San Francisco, emphasized the importance of addressing alignment, monitoring, safety, and security as the organization aims to develop increasingly powerful AI models at a lower cost.

However, the launch comes amid security concerns, as OpenAI has previously had to suspend model development due to unauthorised internet access by an agent. While OpenAI maintains its commitment to advancing AI capabilities, it acknowledges the need for a cautious approach, drawing a distinction between the AI era and the Industrial Revolution.

The company is investing heavily in safety, security, and alignment measures, while also competing with rivals like Meta and Google in the development of AI agents capable of performing tasks autonomously. OpenAI is still privately held and has not yet filed for an initial public offering, but the company is actively seeking to raise substantial private investment.
