Burkina Faso: Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Launch Tafouk TV Channel to Push Their Own Narrative

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have launched Tafouk TV, a new television channel aimed at counteracting Western media narratives and promoting their own perspectives on events in the Sahel region. Broadcasting from Bamako and accessible via Canal+, the channel is a key component of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), a media network being developed by the three military-led states as they deepen their ties with Russia and distance themselves from France and other Western partners.

Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop emphasized the importance of challenging Western coverage to ensure the promotion of the AES's narrative. The channel's programming, which began on September 16, incorporates regional imagery and draws inspiration from traditional Dozo hunters' music. Tafouk TV's news director, Abdoul Niang, a cyberactivist allied with Mali's military authorities, highlighted the channel's role in combating destabilization attempts beyond military interventions.

The AES's media network also includes Daande Liptako radio and plans for a joint official news agency in Niamey, aimed at granting the three governments greater control over the presentation of their policies and security campaigns. However, concerns have been raised about the potential for Tafouk TV to become a propaganda tool, with a former Nigerien MP urging for genuine, open debates that allow for diverse opinions.

Despite these concerns, Russia has publicly backed the channel, praising its role in combating disinformation and cognitive warfare, and has signed a cooperation agreement with a Russian state-funded broadcaster, RT, covering content exchanges and joint coverage of events in Russia and the Sahel.
