Between heritage and modernity: Mubarak al-Thani explores Doha through architecture

Qatari artist and urban planner Mubarak al-Thani has unveiled a solo exhibition titled "Between The Architectures" at Msheireb Museums, in collaboration with Al Markhiya Gallery. The exhibition explores the interplay between architecture, urban landscapes, memory, and identity. Through a collection of paintings and sculptures, al-Thani deconstructs, reconstructs, and reimagines architectural forms, using geometric structures, repetition, patterns, shifting lines, density, proportion, and depth as visual tools to examine how places are built, experienced, and remembered.

Mohammed al Yousef, manager of Operations and Visitor Relations at Msheireb Museums, highlighted the exhibition's alignment with the institution's mission to support Qatari artists and provide meaningful platforms for their creative work. He emphasized the importance of connecting Qatar's architectural heritage with contemporary creative expression, and using exhibitions like this to give audiences new ways to experience the evolving story of the city.

For al-Thani, the exhibition is deeply connected to Doha, reflecting the coexistence of the city's rich heritage and dynamic contemporary identity. He explained that his work exists in the space between what is built and what is remembered, as Doha is a city that holds two timelines simultaneously. The exhibition's presentation at Msheireb Museums carries special significance, as it returns the works to the environment that inspired them, completing their journey of inspiration and transformation.

Anas Kutit, managing director of Al Markhiya Gallery, praised al-Thani's dual perspective as both an urban planner and an artist, noting that his unique understanding of city structure, growth, and evolution infuses his work with a distinctive depth. "Between the Architectures" allows al-Thani's artistic vision to engage simultaneously with a historic setting and Doha's rapidly changing urban landscape, encouraging visitors to consider the deeper role of architecture in shaping memory, identity, and their understanding of the places they call home.
