Athletics player Zack Gelof sues Detroit Tigers after getting hurt in their stadium

Athletics third baseman Zack Gelof has filed a lawsuit against the Detroit Tigers, alleging he suffered a severe leg injury while playing at Comerica Park. The incident occurred on July 9, 2026, during a game when Gelof attempted to catch a fly ball. According to his lawsuit, while making a sliding catch, his right knee collided with an exposed, dangerous metal fence that protruded onto the playing area. This impact ripped his uniform and caused a deep laceration below his right kneecap, forcing him to leave the game.

Gelof's legal team claims the metal fence was sharp, unguarded, and posed a risk to players sliding into or near it. The lawsuit alleges that the fence was not properly padded, spaced, or repaired by the Tigers organization, and that they failed to warn players of the potential danger. Gelof's attorneys argue that the Tigers knew or should have known about the hazardous condition and failed to take corrective action.

The lawsuit seeks compensation for Gelof's physical injuries, lost wages, emotional distress, and other damages. He is seeking reimbursement for substantial medical bills, lost income, and the emotional toll of the incident. The lawsuit was filed in the Wayne County Circuit Court on September 28, 2026.

The Detroit Tigers have not commented on the pending litigation.
