Alex Eala reaches semi-finals in quest for Asian Games gold

Tennis sensation Alex Eala advanced to the semi-finals of the Asian Games, setting her eyes on a gold medal. The Filipino athlete triumphed over Joanna Garland of Chinese Taipei with a score of 7-5, 6-0 in their quarter-finals at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center. Eala, ranked No 18 in the WTA rankings, expressed her excitement about representing her country and participating in such prestigious events.

Despite the match starting with a tight contest, Eala gained the upper hand through a crucial break in the 11th game and went on to secure the set. Eala emphasized that the unpredictability of tennis, both in terms of victory and defeat, is what makes it so fascinating. The 21-year-old athlete, who previously won double bronze at the 2023 Asian Games, had a dominating performance in the second set, leaving Garland, ranked No 168 in the world, without a chance.

Eala finished the match with 77 points, surpassing Garland by 23 points and converting seven of her 15 break-point opportunities. Eala, who started her Asian Games journey with a comprehensive win over Thailand's Patcharin Cheapchandej 6-1, 6-0, will now face fourth seed Wang Xiyu of China in the semi-finals.
