Lucknow witnessed a surprise announcement by the Samajwadi Party (SP) in the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha elections. The party selected corporate executive Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani, along with veteran Ram Gopal Yadav, as its candidates for the Upper House. This move has brought the spotlight onto Nathwani, a man whose career has been marked by significant roles in both corporate management and sports administration.

Dhanraj Nathwani holds the position of Group President at Reliance Industries Limited, a conglomerate renowned for its extensive manufacturing operations. In addition to his corporate responsibilities, Nathwani has also carved a niche for himself in sports, serving as the president of the Gujarat Cricket Association since 2022. His involvement in football administration in Gujarat further highlights his multifaceted interests.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Nathwani is passionate about wildlife conservation and various social initiatives.

The Assembly's effective strength stands at 397, with around 37 first-preference votes needed for a candidate to be elected. The SP believes it has enough numbers, bolstered by support from the Congress, to secure two seats. Any attempt to contest more seats would necessitate backing from legislators beyond their current strength.
