AI’s Payments Breakthrough Will Be Knowing When Not to Pay

AI's latest payment innovation focuses on determining when it is not appropriate to make a payment. Chris Trainor, head of platform strategy, innovation, and AI at Paymentus, explains that while AI models can understand language, financial execution requires caution. Large language models are probabilistic and cannot make safe financial decisions.

The next wave of generative AI will be tasked with executing actions, such as changing autopay settings, resolving billing disputes, creating payment arrangements, and transferring funds without human intervention. However, AI needs to know who is requesting the action, what the person controls, what they are authorized to do, what the service provider allows, and which deterministic infrastructure should execute the transaction.

Identity becomes AI's control plane, establishing a persistent identity layer that connects an authenticated customer with accounts, policies, payment credentials, permissions, and workflows. Authentication is foundational, as AI can converse but not act without it. For example, an AI system can identify changes in an insurance bill, suggest remedies, and guide the customer toward authorized actions.

The integration bottleneck is another challenge, as AI agents may understand customer requests but may struggle to access customer information, billing rules, payments, and communication preferences across different systems. The future architecture may involve separating decision intelligence from transaction execution, with AI interpreting intent while permission layers and deterministic systems control financial actions. In essence, the wallet is not the key factor; the permission structure surrounding it is.
