AFCON qualifiers: Victor Ikpeba names who to blame for Super Eagles’ 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau

Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has identified the team's defensive shortcomings as the primary reason behind their 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The striker defended goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali against criticism, acknowledging that the goalkeeper had limited options due to poor defensive play.

Guinea-Bissau took the lead in the 15th minute through Franculino, followed by Mama Baldé scoring the second goal in the second half. Álvaro Djaló sealed the victory with a stoppage-time goal in the fifth minute of added time. Ikpeba recognized the quality of Baldé's goal, stating that goalkeeper Nwabali had no chance to save it, describing it as technically superior and straightforward.

The former striker emphasized that the lack of a defensive response after losing possession was a significant factor in the third goal. He pointed out that when Nigeria lost the ball, their opponents were not marking the striker or the number 20, which made it straightforward for Guinea-Bissau to capitalize on the situation.

In the current Group L of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, Nigeria is in second place with three points. The team will face Tanzania in a home-and-away, two-legged fixture in November.
