3,524 Myanmar nationals to be sent back in 2nd repatriation phase

As per a Cabinet meeting, Malaysia and Myanmar have mutually agreed to repatriate an additional 3,524 Myanmar nationals in the second phase of the country's repatriation programme. This follows the successful completion of the first phase, which saw the return of 1,476 Myanmar nationals from the Royal Malaysian Navy base in Lumut, Perak, yesterday.

The government spokesman, Fahmi Fadzil, informed journalists that the identities of those to be repatriated were officially identified and forwarded to Malaysia via a diplomatic note on August 13. Fahmi also mentioned that the government anticipates receiving further details on the second group's repatriation soon. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim promised continuous dialogue with the Myanmar government to facilitate the return of more Myanmar nationals currently residing in Malaysia.

The discussions aim to strengthen bilateral cooperation while ensuring a well-organized and procedure-driven repatriation process. As of August 15, immigration depots in Malaysia are conducting identity, immigration status, and security background checks on 10,388 Myanmar nationals, of which 5,000 have been selected for the voluntary and phased repatriation programme.

The repatriation initiative is part of the Malaysian government's efforts to tackle the persistent issue of illegal Myanmar nationals residing in the country.
