(2nd LD) Industrial output, retail sales, facility investment down in Aug.

South Korea's industrial output declined in August compared to the previous month, with retail sales and facility investment also contracting, marking the first such triple drop since May. According to the Ministry of Data and Statistics, industrial production fell by 1.3 percent from July. The mining and manufacturing sector, which is crucial to the economy, saw a 4.8 percent decrease, primarily driven by the automobile industry.

Meanwhile, machinery production increased by 3.1 percent, while automobile production plummeted by 24.8 percent due to a slowdown in the production of recreational vehicles. This was the steepest decline in automobile output since May 2020, largely attributed to the summer vacation season and a labor strike. Lee Doo-won, a senior statistics official, noted that the sluggish automobile industry significantly impacted overall production and consumption.

Additionally, the rubber and plastic industry's output dropped by 11 percent due to a decline in tire production. In contrast, the service sector output rose by 0.5 percent. Information and communication sector output grew by 4.7 percent, while wholesale and retail sector output fell by 0.7 percent. Retail sales, a key indicator of private spending, decreased by 1.8 percent, mainly due to a drop in sales of durable goods like cars.

Sales of semidurable goods such as clothing increased by 0.4 percent, while sales of durable goods fell by 4.5 percent. Nondurable goods, including cosmetics, sales declined by 1.6 percent. Facility investment dropped by 9.5 percent from the previous month, with a 32.8 percent decrease in investment in transportation equipment, which was partly offset by a 1.6 percent increase in machinery investment.
