Women’s ministry: Victims of sexual harassment need to speak up, no shame in it

The Women's Ministry (KPWKM) in Malaysia is urging students to be vigilant about their personal boundaries and to speak out against sexual harassment or violence. Deputy Minister Lim Hui Ying emphasized that this awareness is vital for maintaining a secure educational environment for young people. She further advised that friends and family should also be attentive to any behavioral changes or suspicious situations, offering support and encouragement for those affected to seek help.

Lim highlighted that the issue should not be viewed as shameful; instead, victims are encouraged to come forward and utilize available help channels. She stressed that combating bullying, sexual harassment, and violence necessitates a collaborative effort across various government departments, incorporating advocacy, prevention, awareness, and counseling initiatives. KPWKM, through the Social Welfare Department, provides professional counselors to assist schools when required.

As of September 20, 142 complaints had been lodged with the Tribunal for Anti-Sexual Harassment (TAGS), with 97 successfully resolved. TAGS, created under the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act 2022, offers individuals an alternative, more accessible, and less costly means to address sexual harassment claims. Lim attributed the increase in reported sexual harassment cases to heightened awareness and more people feeling empowered to seek assistance.

According to Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) records, 477 sexual harassment cases were documented in 2022, climbing to 522 in 2023, 788 in 2024, and 1,038 in 2025. By May 31 of this year, 388 cases had already been reported.
