Wayne Rooney says he wouldn’t accept Premier League winner’s medal if Man City stripped

Wayne Rooney has stated he wouldn't be comfortable accepting another Premier League winner's medal if Manchester City were to have their titles ultimately stripped away. With City allegedly found guilty of most of the 115 charges for breaching the Premier League's Financial Fair Play rules, there are doubts over how their numerous trophies from 2009 to 2018 will be treated.

Sanctions are still to be determined, but stripping their titles could be a possibility. If that occurred, Manchester United could possibly claim the 2011-12 Premier League championship – a season marred by a dramatic finishing moment when Sergio Aguero scored the decisive goal against QPR late in the game. Some United players, including defender Rio Ferdinand and goalkeeper David de Gea, have publicly advocated for the return of that title to their collection; however, Rooney – who secured five Premier League crowns with the Red Devils – believes his team didn't deserve it and wouldn't feel right claiming another medal.

Rooney shared his thoughts on the Stick To United podcast, saying he couldn't accept another Premier League medal unless his team truly earned it. He empathized with the perspective of a Man City player, who despite their efforts, might feel devastated if their titles were taken away. Rooney expressed his relief that he wouldn't be in that situation, adding that he is content with the five Premier League trophies he has already won and would not want to claim another one.

He acknowledged that it's possible City might have their titles revoked for the actions of their owners, but he wouldn't feel comfortable accepting a new medal.
