US sanctions 10 international entities over allegedly procuring weapons for Iran's Defense Ministry

The United States has sanctioned 10 individuals and entities, including those based in China, Hong Kong and Pakistan, for allegedly assisting Iran's Defense Ministry in procuring weapons and components, according to the US Treasury Department. These sanctions are part of the Trump administration's efforts to isolate Iran economically and compel it to negotiate an end to the ongoing conflict between the two nations.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the Treasury Department, through "Operation Economic Outcast," will continue to target and disrupt any entities that provide support to the Iranian regime, including material, technological, or financial assistance. The sanctions aim to weaken Iran's capacity to rebuild its weapons programs and increase the costs for those who facilitated the procurement efforts.

Separately, Iraq's transport ministry announced plans to resume flights to Iran in October, pending the completion of regulatory and technical requirements. The ministry secured a special exemption from the US sanctions for this purpose, which would initially operate from the Shi'a holy city of Najaf. The exemption, provided by the US Treasury Department, is set to run for one month, though the exact number of allowed flights has not been determined.
