US ban on Canadian alcohol and dairy takes effect as trade war drags on

A US ban on several Canadian imports, including alcohol, dairy, and motorcycles, has taken effect as a trade dispute between the two nations continues. This move by the Trump administration is a response to Canada's recent imposition of tariffs on US goods following a breakdown in trade negotiations. Canada is not anticipated to retaliate further, with Prime Minister Mark Carney stating that the economic impact of the import bans on Canada is "modest".

US Trade Representative Jamie Jamieson Greer maintains that relations with Canada remain cordial, with no pressing need for action. The ban applies to nearly C$1 billion ($710 million; £530 million) worth of Canadian liquor exported to the US, as well as whey products used in protein powders. Motorcycle exports to the US will also be affected, though the impact is expected to be limited due to the relatively small volume of Canadian motorcycles sold to the US.

The trade restrictions were initially announced in a series of executive orders signed by Trump on September 8th, with Trump alleging that Canada has "treated the United States very unfairly" and accused Canada of "discrimination" against US dairy, automotive, and alcohol industries. Economists and businesses in Canada have warned that the trade bans will introduce uncertainty to the country's trade relationship with the US, its largest trading partner.
