US and Iran renew talks through mediators as Hormuz reopening hangs on ceasefire deal

Qatari mediators are set to engage in separate negotiations with Iran and the United States in New York regarding a revised seven-day proposal aimed at resolving hostilities. The objective of these discussions is to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resolve the current impasse. Reuters cited an anonymous source familiar with the negotiations, indicating that the talks will center on Iran's modified proposal presented during the United Nations General Assembly.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is currently in New York after attending the assembly and will participate in the talks, though it remains uncertain who will represent the US side. Iran's proposal calls for an end to hostilities in Iran and Lebanon, the unfreezing of billions of dollars in Iranian assets, the removal of sanctions on Iranian oil, and the lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports.

In exchange, Tehran would permit the Strait of Hormuz to reopen, and both parties would resume discussions regarding Iran's nuclear program. US President Donald Trump had previously dismissed the Iranian proposal, citing economic pressure on Tehran, but indicated on Sunday that US negotiators would continue to engage in talks this week.

Araghchi stated that the mediators have not formally informed Tehran of the US rejection of the proposal, and Iran awaits Washington's final position before determining its next steps. Araghchi emphasized that a negotiated solution is the only way out of the current situation, highlighting that meeting Iran's conditions is essential for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

While estimates from sources familiar with the negotiations suggest separate Qatari talks with both Iran and the US, Iran's official IRNA news agency reported earlier that no new talks between Iran and the United States are scheduled.
